Problem with alcohol?

Some people wonder if their alcohol use is an issue but often avoid evaluating it for fear that it has become problematic. Thus, I provide you this 4-question test, called the CAGE questionnaire, to help you determine if your drinking may be problematic in the privacy of your own home.  The CAGE questionnaire is an internationally used assessment instrument utilized to identify problems with alcohol.  It was developed by Dr. John Ewing, founding director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

When answering these questions, consider your feelings and behavior over your whole life.  Carefully read each statement and decide if your answer is yes or no. It is important to answer all of the questions and with the answer that is best and most right all of the time.

  1. Have you ever felt you needed to C ut down on your drinking?
  2. Have people A nnoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
  3. Have you ever felt G uilty about drinking?
  4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning ( E ye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
If you answered 'yes' to two or more of the questions, then the result is considered clinically significant and may be a sign of alcohol dependence.

In addition, you may complete the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) by visiting this link:

Scoring: Give yourself one point for each 'yes' answer.  Also, give yourself one point if you answered 'no' on #4, 6,or 8.  A total score of four or more may indicate a problem with using alcohol.
